Body - Clense and mindfullness...

2025-05-28

The fact that the car has sat for over 4 decades has taken its toll on the entire car also the aluminum body and the paintwork.

So there are no easy way out of it, and the entire body needs to be striped down to bare aluminum of two reassons, one is that it will need a new coat of paint, and before that it will also need some bodywork both on the body itself but also on the doors and chassis.

That job I will leave in the hands of those who has the knowledge of such!

But to make that job a bit more indulcing, I will see to that the work shop has a "new" canvas to work on and I will therefor see to the paintstripping of the car.

Seeing that body and the amount of surface that needs to be stripped off, it seems to be a whole lot of work and I decided to make some trial areas, one on the left front wing and one on the boot lid, just to get a feeling of the amount of work and with that the amount of time?

I have spend a lot of time trying to find out the best product to use, and I´ve ended up with a product called Rust-Oleum, it does not contain MethylenChlorid which will attack the aluminum if so.

The product are a milky gel, and easily applied with a brush, once that are done, I decided to cover the area with some plastic, to get it to work "wet" for a longer time.

I let it sat for 5-10 minutes before I started to strip the paint, and the first layer came of fine, leaving the next layer to be applied with the gel.

As far as I can tell, there are some sort of black primer applied as the first coat to the aluminum, then there are a second layer that must be filler and then there are 2 layers of paint?

I was pretty supprised of all the "scratch-marks" on the bodywork underneath the layers, but that´s how it was done at Touring Carozzeria back in 1964, the guys who did the bodywork knew that the painters would cover it all up in preperation for it to be painted.

I find such thing extremly facinating, seeing history underneath the filler and the paint.

The stripping seems much easier than I had expected, as the gel works ahead, you can applie multiple areas and start working as soon the paint starts to bubble up, then you can applie another coat if needed?

The layers of primer, filler and paint are extremly thin, again the craftmanshift put in these cars keeps supprise me, and after 30 minuttes of work I had the trial areas ready.

I will need a satinating machine to brush of and geat the surface all clean, before it will be washed to get rid of any leftovers of the Rust-Oleum.

But I´m very saticefied with the result and even more of the product, and I´m very confident that the whole car can be stripped in two days, and I´m planing to strip halfe of the car, just to see the difference between the old paint an the shiny Superleggera body...
