Just returned from a 1300 km roadtrip around the coast of western Denmark, filled up with impressions and new energy.
Many hours spend behind the steeringwheel in our old Ferrari gives one some time to wonder around the Flaminia project.
I´ve allready decided last year, when I received the car, that this one was going to be my last project car, and the fact that I´m going to be the lead on this, I´ve promised Mrs H. that I´ll take my time and I´m going to enjoy the process bringing it back to nearly as possible.
A rough master plan are allready on the table and some of the major parts are being brought to respective workshops that specialize in their trade.
In two weeks time the engine will be sent of to Italy for a rebuild, I´m still not sure if I´m going to send the gearbox with it, knowing from others, those gearboxes are pretty tough, so a good clean, a new clutch and some fresh transmission oil, will bring wonders to it?
I have also reach out to the chosen interior trimmer, and to the suplier of the hides, the trimmer will need to see the seats and cushings in the rear to give me an estimate of how many hides from Connolly I will have to order, and the supplier which is UK Hides have been contacted for a quote pr hide, my own guess are 3 whole hides which are around 5.5 Sq meters pr hide, I think that will be enough for 2 front seats, a rear seat and the armrests and of corse the padding on the underside of the rear bonnet, but I will leave that to the experts to decide.
I received message that the car would be delivered by the end of this week, then I can invite the workshop that are going to do the partial bodywork, just so give them a head start of what to expect, and also for both parties to have an idea of the future costs.
I´m going to strip the car myself, and I´m also in charge of the restoration of the front and rear subframe, enginecompartment, brakes and brake booster, pedalbox, chrome and brightwork, steeringwheel, wheels, fueltank, lights, bumpers, seals and rubbers and a some other parts.
For some of it, that means a lot of cleaning, other parts simply needs to be replaced or rebuild.
This restoration will not be a total and frame of restoration, this will be a partial and very critical one, that leaves as much as possible in original condition, cleaned and 100% functional.
One example are the engine bay, that I´ll try to preserve with a deep steam clean, leave it nearly as it left the factory in 1964
That will be the overall guide for the rest of this car, but there will be no corners cut to short, and this rough masterplan can be altered as we go along and starts to dig in.
